COMPARE: Jeep Grand Cherokee vs Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer

Compare Two New 3-Row SUVs: Jeep Grand Cherokee L vs. Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer

For 2022, Jeep offers two new from-the-ground-up vehicles aimed at the heart of one of the fastest-growing market segments, three-row SUVs. As the historic off-road brand grows after celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2021, the addition of the Grand Cherokee L and Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer twins bring Jeep increased comfort, capability and refinement.

There's lots to compare and contrast between these two great Jeep models. Read on for lots of details to help you decide which is best for you!

Introducing the Jeep Grand Cherokee L

The three-row Grand Cherokee L rides on an all-new uniframe platform shared with the traditional two-row Grand Cherokee (Spring 2022) bringing next-generation ride comfort, safety technologies and advanced 4x4 engineering. The L offers seating for six via second-row captains chairs or seating for seven if you opt for a bench in the second row. The third row is exclusively available as a two-person bench seat for maximum comfort. Cargo space behind the third row bests competitors such as the Toyota Highlander and GMC Acadia, while still maintaining superior Jeep off-road capability.

The Return of the Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The body-on-frame Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are aimed at the highest end of the SUV segment, offering immense passenger space, even more cargo volume, and class-leading towing capability. Like the Grand Cherokee L, there are three rows of seating with the option for either second-row captains chairs or a second-row bench seat. One key difference however, is that the extra width of the full-size Wagoneer & Grand Wagoneer affords more than enough room for a full three-person bench seat big enough to hold large adults comfortably. Notably the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer have more legroom in the third row and more cargo volume behind it than competitors such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS and Lincoln Navigator.

What are the size differences between the Jeep Grand Cherokee L and the Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer?

The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer provide more space than the Grand Cherokee L, being longer, taller, and wider. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer can fit up to 8 passengers (seating three in the third row) compared to the Grand Cherokee L's maximum of 7 passengers (which offers seating for two in the third row). The third row of the Grand Cherokee L is best suited for those with smaller frames while the extra passenger volume of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer can fit taller and wider adults much easier.

The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are heavier than the Grand Cherokee L and thus feature more powerful engines standard. Both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer provide powerful Hemi V8s standard enabling them to tow much heavier items because of it, such as large boats, secondary vehicles and utility trailers. However, the Grand Cherokee L is more nimble and agile thanks to it's smaller size and uniframe design. This allows the Grand Cherokee L to be the only Trail Rated Jeep three-row as both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are a bit too wide and heavy to tackle most off-road trails. Not to be out done, however, all three of these vehicles are equipped with the best Jeep offers in mechanical and technological capability. Take a look at the numbers below to see specifics differences between these models.
