The Storied History of the Jeep Wrangler

Today's Jeep Wrangler is a cool-looking SUV with a removable top and outstanding off-road skills. But the Wrangler's legacy dates back as far as World War II. Back in 1941, Willys-Overland won a contract with the U.S. military to provide a four-wheel-drive vehicle for the army. That vehicle was officially known as the MB, but it soon earned the nickname "jeep."

One of the things Jeep owners love about the Wrangler is that it hasn't strayed from many of its original design cues. It still has the boxy shape, round headlights, slotted grille, and back-mounted tire that make it one of the most easily recognized vehicles in the world. Planet Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram has a vast selection of new and used Jeep Wrangler SUVs for sale in Franklin, MA. Keep reading to find out more about the Wrangler's storied legacy.

After its success in WWII, Willys started producing a Jeep version it could sell to American civilians. This Willys-Overland CJ-2A quickly became popular for its reliability, durability, and ease of repair. In 1953, Kaiser Motors bought Willys-Overland. The next year, it introduced the CJ-5, which managed to stay in production for nearly 30 years. It wasn't until 1987 that the name "Wrangler" was attached to the Jeep vehicle we know today. Called the Jeep Wrangler YJ, these early Wrangler models had a wider track, lower ride height, reduced body roll, and a larger windshield. In 1997, Jeep introduced a new generation of Wrangler, the TJ. This version gained a coil-spring suspension instead of leaf springs. In 2007, Jeep completely redesigned the Wrangler. The new vehicle was taller, wider, and longer, and it rode on a longer wheelbase. Called the Jeep Wrangler JK, this is the first model to be offered in a four-door version.
