Jeep Cherokee vs Jeep Renegade

PLANET'S EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Jeep introduced an all-new Cherokee for the 2014 model year, and one year later the all-new Renegade.  Renegade slots right under the Jeep Cherokee in price and size.
Comparably equipped, the Renegade costs about $2,500 less than a Cherokee.

In terms of driving dynamics, Renegade handles more like a traditional sport utility vehicle with an erect seating position and firm ride.  Both are plenty peppy to merge on to the interstate.

Cherokee sprang to life from the "compact" Dart platform, and Renegade from the "sub-compact" Fiat 500x platform, so the Cherokee offers a little more cargo space and interior room.  Renegade is a late-comer to the mini-ute segment, capitalizing on a major shift in the auto industry toward crossover vehicles that have the economy of a car but the utility of a truck.  Renegade is the lightest sport utility vehicle offered in the United States.

Jeep offers Renegade in both front drive and four wheel drive.  For serious off-roading, opt for the "Trail-Rated" Trailhawk version of either vehicle which specifically designed for rock crawling.

Only Renegade offers an optional advanced technology group help you drive more safely, even including automatic braking and lane departure warning if you're distracted. However, Cherokee offers ten (!) airbags to Renegade's seven.

Both Latitudes come standard with many features:

  • Fog lights
  • Privacy glass
  • UConnect touch screen infotainment systems
  • Alloy wheels
  • Power windows, mirrors, locks
  • Roof rails

Four Wheel Drive System

Both come standard with front wheel drive but most are ordered with four wheel drive.  Cherokee is available with your choice of three (!) 4WD systems.  Standard Active Drive I satisfies the needs of most drivers who don't go off road. Renegade offers two systems, one for the rock-hopping Trailhawk and another for the balance of the models.
